Safety Tips for Chicago Pedestrians and Cyclists

    Last updated 1 year ago

Studies show that 164 pedestrians were killed in Illinois in 2005 alone, while another 64,000 were injured nationally. While the numbers have changed slightly over the years, pedestrians and cyclists are still at great risk for personal injury while sharing the road with other motorists. Learn how you can protect yourself with these safety tips for the pedestrians and cyclists of Chicago:

    Stay on the Sidewalk

One of the best ways for pedestrians to stay safe alongside motorists and cyclists is to walk on the sidewalk whenever possible. If the sidewalk is absent or obstructed, then you’ll want to walk facing traffic so that you can see oncoming vehicles and potential threats. However, Chicago law forbids cyclists from riding upon any sidewalk in a district if they are over the age of 12—unless the sidewalk has been officially designated as a bicycle route.

    Utilize Crosswalks

Pedestrians should always cross streets using designated crosswalks to avoid an accident or injury. This not only helps keep you safe and protects your rights in the event of personal injury, but is also required by Chicago law. For example, Chapter 9-60-060 of the City of Chicago’s Transportation Ordinances for Pedestrians states that pedestrians are prohibited from crossing a roadway except in a marked crosswalk.

    Increase Visibility

Pedestrians and cyclists alike should increase their nighttime visibility by carrying a flashlight, utilizing bike reflectors, and wearing retro-reflective or light colored clothing.

    Wear a Cycling Helmet

Cyclists should always wear a helmet that meets the nationally recognized safety requirements—whether riding alongside heavy traffic or within residential neighborhoods.

Pedestrian and cyclist laws are essential to promoting overall safety and defending your rights in the event of a personal injury or bicycle or motorcycle accident. 5 Examples of Personal Injury Claims

    Last updated 1 year ago

5Personal injury is an umbrella term that refers to any type of personal injury sustained due to the fault or negligence of another. However, personal injury does not always need to result in bodily injury; for example, injury can be classified as physical, financial, intentional, or injury to one’s reputation. Consider these three examples of personal injury claims to learn more:

    1. Auto Accidents

Car accidents and trucking accidents are among the most common types of personal injury claims.  Single vehicle accidents are typically caused by driver inattention, dangerous road conditions, or the negligence of another driver, whereas multiple vehicle accidents are often the cause of excessive speed. Regardless of the cause, it is crucial to seek the guidance of a personal injury attorney following an auto accident.

    2. Slip and Fall Accidents

Many injury cases are as a result of a defective premises or a dangerous condition on a premises.  Whether it’s a broken stair or a slippery substance on the floor of a grocery store, the owner and/or occupier of the land may be responsible for your damages.  A lawyer can better explain the intricate details of a slip and fall injury claim.

    3. Work-Related Injuries

Many personal injury cases are also the cause of work-related injuries.   In Illinois, proving fault on behalf of the employer is not required.  There are several benefits that you are entitled to if you are hurt at work and it is imperative to retain an attorney who can obtain those benefits for you.

    4. Nursing Home Neglect and Abuse.

As the population in the United States grows older, the number of nursing homes has greatly increased.  Along with the fast growth in the population of nursing residents has come an increased amount of neglect and abuse.  Whether its falls, fractures, bedsores or dehydration, the nursing home can be held responsible to the resident and the family members for the damages caused by the nursing home.  The Illinois Nursing Home Care Act protects residents of nursing homes from neglect and abuse.  An experienced lawyer can better explain the details and how to proceed.

    5. Product Liability

Personal injuries can also result from an unsafe or defective product. Examples of defective products include air bags, car seats, medical devices, construction and mechanical equipment, toys, and household appliances.  Individuals that suffer personal injury due to a defective product can work with an injury attorney and gain compensation from the designer, manufacturer, or distributor of the product.

Whether you’ve suffered a personal injury due to product liability, an auto accident, unsafe workplace conditions, or simply the negligent actions of another, Malman Law in Chicago is here to help.
